Taking Port Design from Art to Science
Phil Martin has been finding performance through porting cylinder heads and intake manifolds for over 30 years. Beginning with work on NHRA Pro Stock engines, he quickly moved to working in NASCAR engine shops.
Through countless hours on the flow bench, Phil refined his approach to head and manifold re-design through experience with everything from Buick V6 engines for the then-Busch Grand National/now Xfinity series, to Pontiac, Chevrolet and Ford V8s for NASCAR's premier series.
By 2000, Phil was managing cylinder head departments for a succession of leading Cup engine builders/teams, including Roush Racing, Robert Yates Racing and PPI.
Working through as many as 18 variations of a single intake manifold to find the optimum designs, Phil changed manifold development from an art to a science, proving his approach on the dyno and in winner's circles.
For the last several years, Phil has been further refining his craft on a broad range of OEM and aftermarket cylinder heads and manifolds, working on iron and aluminum castings for everything from road racing to drag racing, late model stocks, big-block modifieds and sprint cars. His modifications to heads and manifolds currently dominate big-block modified racing, working for engine builders from Ohio and Indiana to Pennsylvania and along the East Coast.
